US accepts WTO talks as China asks to join Brazil tariff case

Washington agreed on 10 August to consult Brazil at the WTO. China filed the same day, citing a substantial commercial interest in US Section 301 duties.

US accepts WTO talks as China asks to join Brazil tariff case
On 10 August 2026 the United States accepted Brazil's request for WTO consultations over two extra tariffs: 25% tied to a Section 301 probe of Brazilian trade practices, and 12.5% linked to forced-labour allegations, together lifting duties on part of Brazil's US-bound exports up to about 37.5%. Brazil argues the measures sit above US bound rates, treat it less favourably than other members, and bypass WTO dispute settlement in favour of unilateral action. The US said it is ready to meet on a mutually convenient date. China asked to join the consultations the same day, saying comparable US tariffs already reshape competition for Chinese goods in the American market. Participation would not open a separate Chinese complaint, but it widens a case that exporters should watch for knock-on effects on HS classification, origin and duty planning.
